Fresh high-altitude Cabernet Franc for a relaxed dinner

Domingo Molina Cabernet Franc x 750ml is a fresh, concentrated Argentine red with the lifted character of its high-altitude Salta setting. It brings gentle complexity rather than a heavily oaked feel: only part of the wine is aged in older French oak, so the Cabernet Franc and its mountain-grown freshness remain at the centre.

Open it for a relaxed dinner when steak, grilled meats or lamb are on the menu, or pour it alongside empanadas, roasted vegetables, a rich pasta dish or mature cheese. It is a particularly appealing choice for anyone keen to explore an Argentine red beyond the familiar.

Made in an annual production of approximately 4,000 bottles, this is a small-production bottle with a clear sense of place and a food-friendly, fresh character.

Why you’ll love it

  • Fresh yet concentrated: a high-altitude red with lift as well as depth.
  • Gently complex, not oak-led: partial ageing in older French oak adds nuance while keeping the grape in focus.
  • Made for the table: a natural partner for grilled meat, lamb, empanadas, roasted vegetables and mature cheese.
  • A change from the expected: 100% Cabernet Franc from Salta for those looking beyond familiar Argentine reds.
  • Small-production character: approximately 4,000 bottles are made each year.

The story behind the wine

Domingo Molina is a family winemaking project in North Yacochuya, near Cafayate in Argentina’s Calchaquí Valleys. The producer is led by brothers Osvaldo, Gabriel and Rafael Domingo, while Argentina’s national tourism body records that the winery builds on the legacy of their father, a pioneer of wine production in the valleys. That family connection gives useful context to a bottle rooted in one of Argentina’s most distinctive mountain-wine areas.

The wider Domingo Molina estate works in the high, dry landscape around Cafayate, where vineyards range from 1,600 to 2,300 metres above sea level. For this Cabernet Franc, the grapes are grown at 2,200 metres in the Calchaquí Valleys. Intense sunshine and cool nights help the fruit develop flavour while retaining the freshness that shapes the wine’s character; its alluvial sandy-loam soils have stones at depth.

The grapes are hand-harvested in 20kg boxes in the last week of March. They macerate on their skins for 12 days and ferment for seven days in stainless-steel tanks with local yeasts. After malolactic fermentation, 30% of the wine is aged for 12 months in second- and third-use French oak, adding gentle complexity without obscuring its high-altitude Salta identity.
